This photograph was amongst Leo Dougherty's family photos. John (Jack) Sullivan and his wife Kate Matilda (Matty) Comyn. 1901

John Sullivan  Labourer married Johanna Collins 1864.. John Sullivan (snr) born Treemillcatte, Cork, Ireland he married Johanna Collins, Carough, Cork Ireland 17th March 1864. Johanna born Carough, Cork, Ireland.

  The family were paid emmigrants and arrived in the province of Otago New Zealand on board the Ship Otago on the 6th June 1874. From Skibbereen Co Cork Ireland.

Julia Sullivan  aged 9 born 10th March 1865

James Sullivan  aged 6 born 1st June 1866,

Daniel Sullivan  aged 5 born 17th February 1868. Daniel was a bootmaker he died in 1890 aged 21 of Tuberculosis, he is buried with John, Kate and Nessie in the old cemetery Oamaru N.Z.

Patrick Sullivan  aged 4 born 6th May 1871. Patrick Sullivan died 1908 aged 32 of Tubuclosis at Featherston, Wairarapa North Island N.Z  He is Buried in Featherston  He was a platelayer probably with the railway he married Patience Maria Jopson they lived in Graytown Wairarapa North Island N.Z . They had no family.

Mary Sullivan  aged 2 born 1872.

John (Jack)  aged 9 months born 14th May 1873. 

Going by the electoral rolls it seems the family settled in or round Oamaru and having more babies..

William Sullivan born 1877,  

Kate Ann Sullivan born 17th April 1879 buried in the old cemetery,

Nelly born 1880

Enetta (Nettie) Sullivan 1882 died 26th November 1914 age 37 buried old cemetery Oamaru.

Eliza Sullivan  born 1884

1896 Electoral Rolls say Johanna wife was in Thames Street Oamaru, John husband was with John Junior at Humber Street Oamaru. Mary a spinster in Thames street Oamaru.   Daniel died in 1890 aged 21 at Eden Street Oamaru. Where is the rest of the family?.

1900 rolls say Johanna in Thames Street Oamaru, John and John jnr. in Humber Street. 1911 Johanna and John a labourer are in Chelmer Street Oamaru as is a Nettie Sullivan a weaver.  1914 Johanna and Nettie are in Chelmer street Oamaru. 1919 electoral rolls only list Johanna married in Chelmer street Oamaru.  

Johanna died 8th December 1926 and is buried in Bromley cemetery Christchurch.

John Sullivan Junior married Kate Matilda (Matty) Comyn Born in Dunedin Otago N.Z. in 1865. Her Father was George William Comyn Police Constable - Her Mother Catherine Comyn nee Kileen.

John Sullivan  (Known as Jack) a farmer and Kate Matilda (Known as Matty) married at Saint Josephs Cathedral Dunedin New Zealand 8th April 1901 . 

The 1905 electoral roll shows that John (Jack) and Kate Matilda are living on a property on Totaratahi North Otago then in 1911 had moved to Temuka. 

In 1902 They had a daughter - Daisy Clarenda Mary (Known as Mary) who was born in Dunedin.    Mary Married Edward Joseph Fraser in 1926 he died Friday the 24th April 1936 aged 48 years he is buried in the Bromley cemetery Christchurch N.Z. His address was Temuka New Zealand. Daisy died in the Margaret Wilson Home Timaru 1st May 1989 aged 87 and is buried in the Timaru cemetery with Clarenda Comyn her Mothers sister who never married. Clarenda died 15th March 1954 aged 79.

Kate Matilda died in 1943 aged 76. She is buried in the Bromley cemetery She had lived in 7 Trafalga St Christchurch. She had two younger sisters Mary Georgina born 1871 and Clarinda born 1873 .

John (Jack) Sullivan Junior died Wednesday the 27th July 1966. And is buried in the Bromley cemetery Christchurch New Zealand aged 93. He is buried with his wife Johanna.

Shannon Harbour co Offaly

Bernard Thomas Sullivan his Father was Edward Sullivan Shannon Harbour Kings county now known as Offaly Ireland, on the upper extremity of the Shannon River.  The Harbour was built to accommodate, passengers and barges, travelling along the Grand Canal. The Irish Orphan girls from Parsontown Union Workhouse and other such, began their canal journey to Dublin, from Shannon Harbour, enroute to Australia and probably New Zealand. Bernard Thomas known as Thomas or Tom was born 1837 in shannon Harbour. I don't know when he came to New Zealand but was probably in the late 1860's. His marriage was 1871. First listed on the electoral rolls in 1875 as a miner in Home gully Naseby New Zealand, and lived in a wood and iron house.  He married Catherine Mungovan known as Kate (daughter of Peter Mungovan born 1814 and Ellen O’Grady born 1815 Gallows Park Ennis Co Clare Ireland) at St Josephs church Dunedin Otago N.Z. 6th May 1871. Tom was the pound keeper for about 24 years living on Pound Hill the Naseby side of the now golf coarse. They had no living children. Catherine (Kate) died the 28th April 1908.. Bernard Thomas (Tom) died aged 76 on the 15th October 1913. Both are buried in Naseby..

 Two sisters Mary Josephine and Catherine (Kate) daughters of Ellen and James Downes, granddaughters of Peter Mungovan and Ellen O’Grady married Brown brothers Bernard George and Andrew Joseph Brown sons of Andrew McGinnell Brown and Mary Ward. The sisters Aunt and Uncle were Catherine nee Mungovan and Bernard Sullivan. (Kate and Tom).

Kathleen Sullivan McMullin (Cassie)
Kathleen Sullivan Brown daughter of Andrew Joseph Brown and Catherine Downs nee Mungovan. Cassie lived into her 101 year. I was so lovely she had attended the 150 years of gold celebrations in Naseby just before her death. The Sullivan in her name was after Kate and Bernard Sullivan her Aunt and Uncle.

Our Bridget Sullivan.

Bridget Sullivan born round 1847 in Ireland she came to Naseby New Zealand round 1863 -1864.  She met James Spedderi of Gozo an Island of Malta. They married at Saint Josephs church Dunedin in 1875. They had six children only four living. James was a gold miner and hotel keeper owning the Kyeburn hotel Naseby in the mid 1960's. The family moved to a place called Garibaldi where he had a mining company. Bridget fell ill and died in the 21st September 1882 aged 35 and is buried with her husband James in the Naseby cemetery New Zealand

Are BERNARD THOMAS SULLIVAN born 1837 Shannon Harbour Kings County now known as Offaly Ireland and  BRIDGET SULLIVAN born round 1847 in Ireland - Died 21st September 1882 aged 35 brother and sister or related ??  Or is JOHN (JACK) SULLIVAN from Skibbereen a relation If anyone has some information I would love to hear from you please.
