The Gibbs and Scoullars

The Gibbs Family of Tackley.

The North Oxfordshire village of Tackley lies in the Cherwell Valley, 8 miles North of Oxford and just 3 miles from the town of Woodstock. The name Tackley is probably derived from ‘tack’ (from the pre 7th century Danish ‘tacca’), meaning sheep or ewes, and the Anglo-Saxon ‘leah’ (-ley), meaning a glade, clearing or enclosure. As we often have sheep in the fields in the middle of the village it’s good to see that some things don’t change. As you enter the village you pass St Nicholas Church, which has been there since Saxon times. A traditional green with a fine old oak tree forms the centre of the village. Tackley is a mixture of old cottages, converted buildings and modern houses, and a population of just under 1,000 residents.

Samuel Dunstan/Dunstone/Dunston marries Eliza Janes Nankerves

John Nankerves 1807-1894 married Elizabeth. Their children were Eliza Jane b 1839, (my Great Great grandmother) Ann b 1845, James b 1848 and John b 1850. The family lived in Penzance Cornwall England. John Nankerves was an Agricultural labourer How and when did Eliza Jane Nankerves get to Australia?

Samuel Dunstan married Eliza Jane Nankerves, she16 and he 21 in 1853 at Independent Congregational Church in Melbourne Victoria Australia. Did the families know each other from Cornwall ? Eliza Jane and Samuel had a son named John DUNSTAN in1850 in Collingwood  Victoria Australia.  Samuel DUNSTAN died in 1854 aged 21.

CORONERS INQUEST:

MONDAY 6 NOVEMBER 1854:  An inquest was held on Saturday before Dr. Youl. on the body of drayman named Samuel Dunston. From the evidence adduced, it appeared that the deceased, who was twenty one years of age, was driving a cart and horse, when the horse ran off throwing the deceased out, and one of the wheels passing over his head causing almost instantaneous death, He was quite sober at the time. The accident happened in Johnston street Collingwood near the Uniacke Hotel. He has left a wife (Eliza Jane) and one child (John Dunston) Verdict - Accidental death.

Eliza Jane Dunstan and William Temby

William Temby Snr. John Henry Jnr. John Henry Snr. and Christopher Snr.

John Temby an iron miner b 1778-1840 married Isabella Bennetts b 1782-1869 in Cambone Cornwall England. They had Mary Temby, Elizabeth Temby, John Temby, William Temby, Samuel Temby an iron ore miner and Christopher Temby.

William an iron miner and lived in Urswick Lacanshire England married Jane b 1826-1889. William died 1874 at Cleator Moor age 59. Their children were Isobella died 1869 age 86 at Cleator, Whitehaven with son Samuel, John died 1840 Polgear Wendron Cornwall, Samuel an Iron Ore Miner, Anne Maria died in 1903 Mudgee, New South Wales, Australia, James Robert an iron ore labourer lived with his widowed mother and William Temby an iron ore miner.

Soon after Samuel Dunstan's death Eliza Jane DUNSTON married William TEMBY in 1856 (reg 191). Samuel's Mother was Elizabeth Temby so was there connections there too ? They had a son named William Henry in 1857 in Collingwood (reg 4210, TENBY); sadly, he died aged 2 years in 1859 (reg 3002, TIMBY). Both show mother as Eliza NANKERVIS/NANCURVIS.  William Eliza Jane's husband, as William TENBY in 1858 aged 23 (reg 3364) William died.  Poor little thing, left a widow twice and lost a little 2 year old boy and she was probably not yet 20 years of age.

Maybe this is all correct and maybe not but I would like to believe Eliza Jane and the Nankerves family knew the Dunstan and Temby Families in Cornwall England.

Arthur Scoullar and Eliza Jane Temby

Arthur Scoullar in later life.

Arthur Scoullar was born in Stewarton, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1830 son of Joseph Scoullar and Isobel Brodie. He had six siblings.

Mary b 1815.

Janet b 1817.

Anne b 1822.

Isabel b 1825.

John  born 1827 in Stewarton Scotland, he married Mary Ann Gordon in Barony Lanarkshire Scotland on the 25th May 1851 aged about 24. John died 10th May 1892 at Barwon near Nathalia Victoria Australia aged 65. Mary was born 9th February 1821 in Scotland she died 8th February 1914 at Mathalia Victoria. Their children were

Joseph Gordon born in Lanark Scotland 1852 and died 18th June 1925 in Christchurch N.Z.  Joseph Gordon came to New Zealand when he was a young man of around 18 years (He was a newspaper journalist) to live with his Uncle Arthur Scoullar. He apparently had an affair with the maid and she got pregnant. He was so the story goes was banished from the family.  The case against Joseph Scoullar, (Robert Mahon seeking on behalf of his daughter Mary, "expenses incurred in connection with her confinement"), was of course, dismissed. The Court reports don't even mention the child. It is perhaps curious that confinement expenses only, are being sought ?
If the child was still living then surely Mr Scoullar would have been called upon to pay maintenance for it's upbringing.  MAHON - Baby - aged 1 week Died: 4 April 1876 Buried : Northern Cemetery  Joseph married Margaret Sullivan 19th March 1880 at Bluff N.Z. They had 14 children 4 dying in infantcy.

John Gordon born 1860 in Castlemaine Victoria he died in 1874 in Harcourt Victoria.

Ann born 1862 in Harcourt Victoria she died in Elstonwick Victoria she married Hugh Ormond in 1882 at Echua.

James born 1865 at Barker Creek Victoria and died 1936 in Queensland. He married Ellen Ormond in 1885 and then Margaret Ormond in 1892.

Mary born 1867 Loddon Victoria and died Dubbo N.S.W. she married Albert Lennon 1909.

Agnes born 1870 Castlemain, Victoria and Died Nathalia Victoria she married William Lubke in 1890 at Narioka.

Elizabeth born 1873 in Loddon she died in 1940 in Lillydale Victoria she married John Dohnt in 1902 at Narioka.

Margaret born 1876 in Loddon she died in Nathalia in 1933 she married Charles Schier in 1901.

Isabella born 1857 at Parramatta N.S.W. She died in Nathalia in 1906 she married Henry Lubke in 1902 in Narioka.

Jane born 1855 in Parramatta she died in 1921 in Drouin Victoria she married Walter Spinks in 1877 at Deniliquine N.S.W..

 Alexander born 1832.

ARTHUR  was sent to work at the age of seven, and for eight years was engaged in making Kilmarnock bonnets. He was then apprenticed to the cabinet making business in Glasgow, where he completed his term about 1850, and, in 1854, sailed for Melbourne, as a carpenter's mate on the ship “Contest”.

Arthur SCOULLAR married Eliza Jane TINBY (Temby) nee Nankerves in 1860 (reg 246). They had a daugher named Annabella in 1861 (reg 266) and another, Amelia, in 1862 (reg 20131, as SCHOOLER), mother as Eliza Jane Nankervis. Both born in Collingwood Victoria Australia.

Arthur Scoullar may have adopted Eliza Jane and Samuels Dunstan's son John Dunston who would have been about 5 or 6 years old, when they married. Eliza made her mark on documents so was the name Dunstan mispelt to Donaldson at some stage. There certainly doesn't seem to be two little boys. Seems strange that a birth certificate for John Donaldson Scoullar and  a death certificate for John Dunstan can't be found. It may have been written as it sounds early on and just stuck.  Donaldson/Dunstan.)  In Arthur Scoullar's will, he mentions his stepson John DUNSTAN receiving an amount as long as Eliza was alive.   After six unprofitable years on the Australian goldfields he came over to New Zealand, where he was very successful on the Clutha diggings.
